Absolutely! Besides facials, facial treatment, diet and great home care products, sleep is of utmost importance for skin health and beauty.
Have you ever woken up after a late night with little sleep, and waking up tired? I don’t know about you but it sure as heck shows up on my face the next day. I can tell and I’m sure everyone else can too. Dark circles under my eyes, my skin seems lifeless and dull, puffiness and I just overall look tired and drawn. Not too pretty huh?
Has anyone ever told you that you look tired?
So, why is sleep important for our skin? When we sleep, our skin undergoes a repair process. It essentially detoxifies itself while we sleep and boosts antioxidants. Antioxidants fight free radical damage from uv rays.
Lack of sleep also affects our cortisol levels. Cortisol is a stress hormone andCortisol decreases when we sleep. High cortisol levels causes higher stress levels and inflammation. Inflammation causes aging of skin. High levels of cortisol directly interferes with our body’s ability to heal. And can cause an acne breakout and worsen other skin conditions such as acne, skin sensitivity, and can lead to flare ups dermatitis, excema, acne and psoriasis. Lower stress levels allows our skin to regenerate.
And back to the skin aging and beauty of our skin. Sleep deprivation besides leading to unhealthy skin conditions causes accelerated aging of skin. How?
As I said earlier, increased skin inflammation can cause skin to have a decrease of collagen and hyaluronic acid. Collagen and Elastin makes our skin glow, have better texture and bounce.
Hydration increases and balances, leading to less puffiness and bags under eyes, less dryness and less visible wrinkling. better sleep leads to more growth hormones which allow our damaged cells to repair. When we don’t get enough sleep this does not happen leading to increased aging of skin.
And there is a direct correlation to weight gain from loss of sleep.
So, really, all good reasons to get a good nights sleep.
How to get better sleep?
Avoid coffee or other caffeinated drinks later in the day.
Set a certain time every night to go to bed.
Make sure the temperature of your bedroom is cool and comfortable to sleep in.
Don’t eat big meals at the end of the day.
Keep cell phones, iPads out of your bedroom, which can also cause you to use them and stay up later.
So, we have all heard about the old saying about “getting your beauty sleep” well there really is something to it after all.
