Every day we are bombarded with TV and other media created versions of what the ideal
standard of perfect feminine beauty should be. But we must realize that it exists because of Photoshop. So, the expectation for women and girls is to look like that, and if they don’t, they feel something is wrong. And one of the things that stands out about these 15 years, with the faces of those wonderful women I have done facials or other treatments on, is that many would apologize for what they perceived as wrong or bad about their looks. They would speak negatively about their skin, hair, weight, looks. Not that I haven’t done that on occasion. But you know, I never saw what they were picking apart about themselves. Just did not see it. And if there was a problem, it was never as bad as they thought it was. You know that old saying about we being our worst enemies?
A little over a month ago I received 2 calls from a young woman in her 20’s who said her skin was in really bad shape, broken out really badly and red, and that I would see when she came in. The first call was to ask questions, the second to make an appointment. So, I didn’t know what to expect to see, but on the day of the appointment I met her and couldn’t believe how gorgeous she was! Olive skin, beautiful features, and clear skin except for 2-3 blemishes in her chin area and a slight pinkness to her skin.
So, I gave her a facial and talked to her about the fact that her skin is beautiful and she doesn’t have the skin problems that she thinks she has, and by what she described over the phone I expected to see a bad case of Acne. She replied “My mother tells me that all the time, gets mad because she says its not as bad as I think it is”.
SO, I think that what I’m trying to say here is that we all need to STOP! Stop what?? Apologizing for ourselves! Many women I’ve met will apologize for something about themselves, is critical about themselves or cannot take a compliment from someone. Myself Included!
Here is a video on TedTalks from Actress and Makeup Artist Eva DeVirgilis, with a very important message for women. Its only about 11 minutes long, but well worth listening to! It will make you think. Please click the link below.
